Moss removal is a key step when maintaining the life cycle of your roof.

Left unmaintained moss can colonise your roof, laying down its roots and slowly year by year eating into your tiles.  Generally the north facing side is the most effected as this the dampest due to less sun light Although when sheltered by trees or in-between two gables like in the photo to the right it will make use of the damp conditions.

  • Moss prefers concrete tiles as these are the most porous when compared to clay tiles and natural slates.

  • It spreads via spores in the wind.

  • Its roots bury into what ever it grows on holding moister, putting your tiles at risk of cracking when the temperature freezes, just like an outside water pipe bursts in these conditions.

It's cost effective in the long term to maintain your roof with a biocide treatment every few years or when the moss reappears which could be sooner or later depending on the environmental conditions.

This photo shows the moss absorbing the small red concrete tile into its root system.

This photo shows the damage caused by the mosses roots.

The light green bits growing from the main body are the spoor, ready to be taken by the wind to another part of your roof or even your neighbours. This is why a biocide treatment is key, prevention is always better than cure!
